DIY Lipstick Recipe with Essential Oils

DIY-Lipstick-Recipe-with-Essential-Oils

by Sabrina Ann Zielinski (“Mama Z”)

Women around the world apply toxic, synthetic ingredients to their face, including around mucous-membrane eyes and mouths, daily. The chemicals are blinked into eyes, seeped into pores, and accidentally licked into mouths daily, accumulating over a woman’s lifespan. Hence, the reason for my DIY lipstick recipe.

Don’t you want to know those ingredients are safe?

The first stop is the Environmental Working Group database to identify products that are made without toxic chemicals, fragrances, and preservatives. Often, this is the only step someone will consider because it’s hard to believe cosmetics can be replicated at home. This simply isn’t the case – you can DIY cosmetics just like any other topical formulation!

Dangerous Chemicals in Lipstick

Learn how to avoid these dangerous chemicals by making my DIY lipstick recipe. Have you ever wondered how many chemicals you’re swallowing by putting toxic lipstick on your lips? Studies suggests that up to 75% of all lipsticks contain lead! Our friend Dr. Josh Axe published a fantastic article about how dangerous they can be! This is what he says….

“Lipstick and glosses are often ingested over the course of the day so the impact of any toxin is heightened above and beyond skin absorption levels. According to prior research, the Berkeley scientists estimated average lipstick use as twice-a-day applications and heavy use as applying lip gloss or lipstick 10 times a day. One application spreads 10 milligrams of product across a woman’s lips, most of which is ingested. Average use of lipstick means that a woman ingests about 24 milligrams of product. Women that apply lipstick or lip gloss frequently may be ingesting as much as 87 milligrams of product per day.

“The researchers compared what the women were likely ingesting in lip products to health standards for heavy metal consumption like those defined by the EPA for drinking water. They found that average lipstick or lip gloss use in these products resulted in women exceeding daily intake guidelines for aluminum, cadmium, chromium and manganese. In 10 of the products they looked at, daily use meant that a woman would exceed chromium intake recommendations by 100%.”

My DIY lipstick recipe is nothing more complicated than a jazzed up lip balm. In addition to this homemade lipstick recipe, have you tried my DIY lip balm recipe?

16 Impressive Benefits of Drinking Kombucha Tea

16 Impressive Benefits of Drinking Kombucha Tea

Kombucha is a fermented, lightly fizzy sweetened tea with health benefits like aiding in digestion, promoting weight loss, facilitating detoxification, lowering cholesterol levels, boosting heart health, controlling diabetes, and protecting the liver. It also aids in reducing arthritis pain and providing relief from gastric ulcers.
What is Kombucha Tea?

Kombucha tea is a refreshing beverage obtained by the fermentation of sweetened tea with a symbiotic association of acetic acid, bacteria, and specific yeast cultures. Believed to have originated in northeast China during the third century BCE, this miraculous tea has been valued for its unique, refreshing taste and impressive range of medicinal benefits. It is famously known as the ‘Immortal Health Elixir’ in ancient Chinese literature. Other names for kombucha include Manchurian mushroom tea, Russian tea, Kargasok tea, spumonto, tea beer, tea cider, and tea kvass.

It has various flavors depending on whether it’s made from black or green tea and tastes somewhere in the middle of apple cider and champagne.

Kombucha Nutrition Facts

Kombucha contains a range of yeast and bacterial species with polyphenols, amino acids, and organic acids. Post the completion of the fermentation process, the tea develops into a nutritional powerhouse with the richness of minerals like sodium, numerous beneficial enzymes, a range of vitamins such as vitamins B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxin), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cobalamin), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and many healthful chemical constituents such as gluconic acid, oxalic acid, acetic acid, glucuronic acid, usnic acid, fructose, and lactic acid.
Health Benefits of Kombucha Tea

Let’s take a closer look at the many health benefits of kombucha.

Detoxifies the Body

Kombucha contains large amounts of organic acids like glucuronic acid and powerful antioxidants which help in shielding the body from oxidative damage. The antioxidants present in it look out for free radicals and neutralize their effects, thereby repairing and protecting the body from chronic diseases and inflammation. [1] Furthermore, it prevents the harmful effects of pollution caused by the petroleum products along with plastics, pesticides, resins, and heavy metals.

Improves Digestion

Kombucha is fermented with a live colony of bacteria and yeast, so it works as a probiotic by sustaining gut health and provides relief from various abdominal disorders including chronic constipation and diarrhea. The digestive enzymes present in it enhance the effects of glucuronic acid and aid in the breakdown of proteins and saccharides, making the digestive system more efficient.

Promotes Weight Loss

Kombucha tea boosts metabolism. A high metabolic rate helps in weight loss as it makes you feel more energized, and more likely to engage in regular physical exercise. Also, the sugar and calorie content in this fermented tea is very little, five times lesser than a fizzy drink.

Protects Liver

Kombucha possesses the remarkable ability to detoxify the body. It contains a powerful detoxifier glucuronic acid which binds the toxins by entering the liver and eliminates them via kidneys. This helps in reducing the burden on the pancreas and keeps the liver healthy. A research study has shown that this tea helps in restoring the levels of glutathione and is remarkably effective in reducing hepatotoxicity. [2] A comparative study conducted on black tea, kombucha tea, and enzyme-processed black tea has proven the superiority of kombucha tea in providing hepatic protection against toxicity due to the antioxidants in it. [3]

Maintains Cholesterol Levels

Another superb benefit offered by kombucha tea is the maintenance of healthy levels of cholesterol. [4] Research studies have provided qualitative evidence regarding the anti-lipidemic properties of this tea which help in reducing the absorption of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides, and elevating the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) in the body. [5] [6]

Prevents Heart Diseases

Studies show that drinking kombucha can be beneficial for the heart as it regulates cholesterol as well as lowers triglyceride levels in the blood. [7]

Controls Diabetes

Kombucha is a natural therapeutic agent which helps in suppressing the factors that cause diabetic conditions. A comparative study involving black tea and kombucha has revealed that kombucha has better inhibiting properties as compared to black tea and aids in a superior deterrence of the elevated blood glucose levels. [5] The study has also suggested that the tea exerts healing action on the pancreas of diabetic individuals and helps in guarding their liver and kidney functions by reducing the concentration of urea and other unfavorable activities occurring in the plasma membrane.

16 Impressive Benefits of Drinking Kombucha Tea_2

Prevents Cancer

The antioxidant-rich tea possesses anti-microbial properties and prevents conditions such as cancer as it contributes productively to maintaining cellular health and strong immune defense. Studies have shown that glucaric acid present in it is quite effective in the prevention of various types of cancer including pancreatic, colon, and breast cancer. [8] As stated earlier, the detoxification qualities of the drink also contribute to the prevention of different cancers.

Relieves Arthritis Pain

Kombucha contains glucosamines which are beneficial in the prevention and treatment of all types of arthritis. Glucosamine present in it stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid, which helps in the maintenance of cartilage structure and provides relief from the pain associated with arthritis. [9] Hyaluronic acid aids in reducing the free radical damage, lubrication, and elasticity of the joints by empowering the connective tissue to bind the moisture.

Enhances Mood

Kombucha has a variety of amino acids, methylxanthine alkaloids (caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and B vitamins (including B1, B6, B9, and B12), which are needed for a healthy nervous system. This helps in inhibiting the release of stress hormone cortisol, battling depression, balancing mood, and enhancing concentration. Regular consumption of this tea can also help you overcome sleep disorders. Depression is one of the symptoms of a leaky gut. Drinking the tea can rewire the gut-brain axis and heal gut inflammation to promote mental health.

Boosts Immunity

Kombucha is rich in numerous antioxidants that strengthen the immune defense and boost the energy levels of the body. The anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties of this tea help in fighting various bacterial and viral infections. A study conducted on this tea has validated the fact that intake of this drink may help in boosting the immune system. [10]

Anti-microbial Effects

Kombucha tea has anti-microbial properties which may prove effective against a variety of pathogens. An investigative research has revealed that apart from acetic acid, it contains other anti-microbial components, which even at neutral values of pH, provide protection against a range of microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermis, Escherichia Coli, Salmonella enteriditis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogens, and Helicobacter pylori. [11]

Treats Asthma

The theophylline in kombucha is well known as a bronchodilator, which helps control chronic asthma due to its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and bronchoprotective effects.

Heals Gastric Ulcers

Kombucha provides relief from discomfort caused by gastric ulcerations. Studies conducted have revealed that antioxidants and phenols present in this tea help in protecting the mucin content in the gastric tissues and decrease the secretion of excess gastric acids. [12] The same study also suggested that the efficacy of the tea in healing gastric ulcers is at par with the commercially available drug, omeprazole.

Improves Cellular Health

Kombucha helps in maintaining cellular health which is vital for the healthy functioning of the body. A study performed on its tea has shown the protective effects against induced cytotoxicity and demonstrated positive results with respect to the factors implicated in the reduction of cellular toxins. [13]

Other Uses

Finally, kombucha drink has a revitalizing effect which helps retain the natural color of the hair, keeps the skin firm and improves the feeling of overall health and vigor. [14] It is an effective wound healer, which is also known to improve eyesight. [15] Apart from a plethora of health benefits mentioned above, kombucha culture can also be utilized to manufacture artificial leather. [16]

How to Prepare Kombucha Tea?

Kombucha tea is prepared by mixing the colony of bacteria and yeast (called SCOBY, which is an acronym for “symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast”) into sugar and tea, which is followed by fermentation in suitable and sterile conditions.
While sometimes referred as kombucha mushroom, there is no mushroom associated with kombucha. The SCOBY is also called the kombucha mushroom or Mother. This live yeast present in the beverage provides it an active life which carries on even after transferring it into the storage containers. [17] The culture includes Candida stellata, Zygosaccharomyces baili, Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Torulaspora delbrueckii, and Schizosaccharomyces pombe yeasts.
After fermentation, the resultant fluid is a healthy beverage containing a wealth of vitamins, vinegar, and many powerful components.

Side Effects of Kombucha Tea

Although kombucha has been valued as a phenomenal healer, brewing the tea under non-sterile conditions can cause contamination and spoilage which can be extremely harmful. [18]

  • Ceramic pots for brewing: Usage of ceramic pots during the brewing process of the kombucha tea can raise the risk of lead poisoning. [18] The tea, while brewing, has the potential to elute lead from the glaze coating used in the ceramic pots making it unfit for consumption.
  • Gastrointestinal toxicity: Another side effect of kombucha tea is gastrointestinal discomfort, which can cause the onset of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, jaundice, and headaches. [19]
  • Lactic acidosis: Consumption of this tea can result in lactic acidosis in some individuals which can further lead to severe circumstances. [20]
  • Suppressed immune system: While kombucha can activate the immune system, it is not suitable for those on immunosuppressant medication.

Prior to considering kombucha for therapeutic usage, it is always advisable to consult a medical professional to better understand its effects.

Interview with a Psychic

Chakra-locations

I first met Mayra at a Health and Wellness Fair in the North San Francisco Bay Area.  She gave me the most amazing Tarot Card reading.  The absolute best I’ve ever had.  Let’s just say December is going to be the most amazing month.

She went to San Jose State and majored in marketing.  When I saw her booth set up, it made complete sense because her booth was so inviting. It had some beautiful soft fluffy blankets and some plush cushions.

After she graduated, she did the usual of working very hard to climb the corporate ladder.  But she was finding things very difficult and she decided to quit her job and move back home as she felt very lost.  This was a difficult time when the unthinkable happened. A dear close relative ended up with a life threatening disease and she was actually able to assist her mother who was at Reiki II practitioner at the time.

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Mayra a Clairvoyant  who is also a Blue Lotus Reiki Master/Teacher  and Medium who also does Tarot and Card and Oracle readings at https://www.solzana.com.   She is a Clairvoyant who like most healers began with the realization of self healing.  She had gone to a workshop called Meet your Angel at The Mystic Dream in Walnut Creek, CA and she went into a deep meditation and met her Arch Angel Michael.  He showed her that her hands were filled with light and that’s when her journey to Reiki began.

I asked Mayra since she’s a Clairvoyant, how does she get her messages?  She said usually it is not like a picture but it is through her third eye or mind’s eye she is able to have recurring thoughts or visions of different things.  And the thought will repeat in her mind and that’s how she is able to give her reading.  She has the benefit of speaking with the Spirits so she can hear them, she can see them which means that they convey images or colors and then she translates it to what makes sense.

ajna

I asked Mayra if she’s ever experienced synchronicity.  She said yes that everything she does is like being guided by the Universe.   When on the wrong path, everything becomes very difficult.  She has to work very hard at whatever it is she is trying to do. Whether it be a job or a relationship.  When you are on the right path everything is facilitated for us.  Things tend to flow smoothly and you have a huge sense that you are on the right path.

She indicated she was coping with illness of a family member and she was reevaluating her life as she felt lost.   While going through this difficult time she read the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho  It says that things will happen smoothly when you are following your path.  When she read that book she felt extremely lost and didn’t know what to do.  She was trying to force her life into what life expects of you. It’s a story of a guy is traveling the world and he noticed that whenever he’s going against his path or journey it’s harder.  And when he goes into the right direction everything just becomes easier and falls into place.  Mayra learned that family is the most important and that we must value and live each day sit could be your last.

Now she she’s doing her passion, everything is so much easier. For questions you can contact Mayra and she offers services in Tarot and Oracle Card Readings, Reiki, chakra balancing and House/Business blessings and atonement for all levels of Reiki but the most important thing is to find somebody that you are comfortable with.

Mayra advises that if you go to a mystical shop and they have free sessions, go try the free sessions.  See what you feel comfortable with.  Do you feel comfortable with these teachings and this practice.  She welcomes anyone to email her through her website or a phone conversation when she’s available.    There are so many different healing methods and she wants her clients to feel comfortable with her and healing process and their own journey.  You can email here at Solzanahealing@gmail.com.

This was a very informative interview for me and if you want to meet Mayra, she will be facilitating  a Reiki Share event in Vacaville, CA at Bounty Books on September 26, 2018 at 7:00 PM.  Space is limited and you may contact Bounty Books directly for more information.

15 + Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste

It seems like the cool thing to do these days is to go eco-friendly in all aspects of our lives. While some pass this off as a fad, I see it as a much-to-long overlooked necessity. As mothers, we are called to be good stewards of the homes & families that we have been blessed with. As homesteaders & farmers, we are called to be good stewards of the land and resources that we are given. Making some simple Earth friendly changes in your home is a big step in the direction to stewardship and care. I started making changes last year by purchasing eco-friendly household products instead of my usual purchases. There are several products that stuck and I want to share those with you.
Eco-Friendly Household Products for Your Home

1. Tube-Free Toilet Paper

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste_2

I didn’t even know this stuff existed until a few months ago, but it is brilliant! There really is no need for the cardboard tube so why buy toilet paper that has extra trash attached? We have been buying Scott Tube-Free Toilet Paper on Amazon and I don’t plan to switch to anything else anytime soon.

3. Stainless Steel Cups

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste_3

We use stainless steel cups with silicone lids and steel straws (in addition to our mason jars) in our house. The cups are color coded (colored silicone) so each family member knows which cup belongs to him or her. We use these cups at home and when we are on the go. When we visit restaurants that will allow us to bring our own cups, we use these instead of disposable ones. After we are finished with these cups, they will go to a recycling center where they will be reused in a new steel product.

You can also use a double walled stainless steel thermos for coffee, hot tea, or for carrying take out or leftover food.

4. Reusable Straws

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste_4

Plastic straws are the absolute simplest item to ditch when you are trying to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Buy a few reusable straws- you can find them in glass, bamboo, and stainless steel– to use at home and to take with you on the road. This one simple step will keep a significant amount of plastic out of the landfill (or ocean) and if you use a reusable straw in public, you might cause other people to think a little harder about their own product choices.

5. Reusable Ear Cleaner

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste_5

This is one of the eco-friendly household products that I laughed at the first time I saw it. I never thought that I would purchase it for myself, but guess what you can find in my bathroom drawer right now? Yep, this reusable ear cleaner.

My family was using so many q-tips and that resulted in quite a bit of extra trash. The kids would also get into these and scatter them around the house. This little tool has taken care of both of those issues so our ears are clean & we have less trash to throw into a landfill!

I don’t like to bring much plastic into my home, but this purchase seems like a good option compared to throwing q-tips out every day. The plastic in this product also won’t be leaving my home for a long time.

6. Ear Candle

An even better option for ear cleaning is the candling method. All you need is an ear candle (hollow), a paper plate, a pair of scissors to make a hole in the plate, and a match or a lighter. You can watch this video to see how it is done. The video shows an aluminum pie pan, but I recommend a paper plate because it can be composted when you are finished.

7. Natural Baby Care Diapers & Wipes

Cloth diapers were my go-to with my third child, but the extra laundry became too much for me to handle. I didn’t want to go back to disposables because those bad boys take 450 years to decompose! That is not even close to being conducive to an eco-friendly household.

I searched for a couple of weeks to find a solution to my baby bottom dilemma and I finally found exactly what I was looking for… Eco by Naty has #1 Eco-Certified, plant-based, chemical-free, biodegradable (not 100%, but the closest I have found) diapers & wipes. The diapers seem a little odd at first because they are made from completely different materials than most of us are used to, but they are wonderful! We have had no leaks or rashes since making the switch.

You can order a free trial box on their website. I have the diapers & flushable wipes in my Amazon Subscribe & Save cart so they are sent to me each month.

*Cloth diapers are a better option if you can swing it, but I am loving these!

8. Compostable Trash Bags

This product came into our household as a result of our diaper switch. We did not want to put our biodegradable diapers into a non-biodegradable garbage bag because that would defeat the purpose altogether.

I found these Compostable Trash Bags on Amazon and they are working well for us. There is a little learning curve with the bags so let me give you a couple of tips… Don’t put food or wet items directly into the bag because the moisture will cause the bags to begin to break down AND don’t overfill the bags because there is no drawstring and they are not the strongest trash bags in the world. The biodegradability factor of these Trash Bags outweighs the slight inconveniences for me.

9. Compost Bin

I hate to throw food away. Most of our scraps go to our animals, but when we have things that the animals aren’t crazy about we just toss it into our Kitchen Compost Bin. This bin serves as a ‘holding cell’ for this food until we can take it out to the heap.

Also, we are a coffee-loving family so we have many coffee grounds that would be thrown out each day if we didn’t compost. This compost bin gives allows me to reuse the grounds without having to run to the compost pile every morning.

10. Shampoo Bars

This is the newest addition to the eco-friendly household products in my home. Think of all of the plastic that would not be entering your home if you stopped using your liquid shampoo & conditioner. That is exactly what I did! I now make my own shampoo bars (recipe in The Homemade Household) that I can use for my hair and my body. No more shampoo, conditioner, or body wash bottles for us! If you don’t want to make your own bars, you can purchase them as well.

11. Reusable Grocery Bags

I have started shopping at Ruler Foods (a discount Kroger store) where shoppers bag their own groceries to cut down on costs. You can purchase plastic bags at the checkout, but I bring reusable grocery bags because I have seen the effects of plastic bags and it ain’t pretty. I have even made some of my own grocery bags out of old feed sacks.

You can use reusable bags no matter where you shop. If you buy groceries somewhere that has an employee to bag the items for you, just hand them your bags before they start putting them into plastic. This is a super simple step that can make a huge positive impact on the environment.

12. DIY Cleaning Supplies

Another excellent way to create an eco-friendly household is to replace your cleaning supplies with homemade products. Almost all of the cleaning products in my home have been replaced with DIY recipes. My favorites are the All-Purpose Antibacterial Spray, Dish Detergent Cubes, Scouring Powder, and Carpet Freshener. You can find all of my cleaning supply recipes in The Homemade Household.

13. Bamboo Toothbrushes

We started buying Bamboo Toothbrushes for the kids to help reduce the amount of plastic that we go through in our household. The ones that we use are numbered so each child knows which one belongs to him or her.

14. Dental Lace

Most dental floss is made of and packaged in plastic. There are a couple of good alternative options for the standard, but many people aren’t aware of them. Dental Lace is one of these options. This floss is made of silk and it is packaged in refillable & recyclable glass.

A Water Pik is another good alternative to standard floss. It is made of plastic, but it is far from single use. This tool shoots water between your teeth and under your gums to clear out bacteria and debris. The Water Pik comes highly recommended by dentists as well.

16. Reusable Coffee Filter

15 Eco-Friendly Household Products to Reduce Your Waste_8

Opt out of paper coffee filters and use a reusable filter instead. I use a GoldTone filter that came with my Ninja Coffee Bar that works really well. I dump the coffee grounds into my compost pail each morning, rinse the filter, and reuse the next morning. Zero waste win 🙂

Balloons and Wildlife: Please Don’t Release Your Balloons

Balloons are great at birthdays, weddings, graduations and more, but once they get loose, balloons can pose a threat to many animals.

Balloons and Wildlife Please Don't Release Your Balloons_2

Birds, turtles and other animals commonly mistake balloons for food, which can harm or even kill them.

In addition, many animals can become entangled in balloon strings, which can strangle them or hurt their feet and hands.

For example, more than a hundred balloons were recently collected at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey at a cleanup, and that’s just the number that made it to this one particular beach.

Some of the following pictures are hard to look at, but they make clearer than any words why we all should find alternatives to letting a balloon go.

Tummy Time Helps Strengthen Back

baby yoga

Most mother’s know what tummy time is.  It’s when your child is a baby and you put them on their tummy to strengthen their core.  That’s where they eventually get the strength to roll over and crawl.  It’s a very important part of child development. As you know they have to get used to carrying that really large head.  So they lay on their tummy and lift their chest.  They do many poses that are in yoga and pilates.

I am not shy about my neck and shoulder pain.  It comes and goes.  I started to think about child development and how after years of a sedentary job my back had become weak and no amount of massages was going to help it.  So I started to think maybe it was time for me to try some tummy time.

As a Yoga Instructor there are many poses that focus on strengthening your back. Sphynx, Cobra, Up-Dog, Bow and the list goes on.  Pilates also has many as well.  So I would do the Asanas and hold the poses for a breath or two but then move on.

I googled a YouTube Video about Tummy Time and they said that babies need to work up to 15 minutes per day.  But actually what the lady said was to hold Sphynx pose for 15 minutes.  Now I’m not sure if that’s accurate because that sounds like a long time to me.  But I decided to do Sphinx pose for 5 minutes.

This picture can also be modified to where you keep your chin down.  If you feel any pain back off.  You also want to make sure to engage your abdominal muscles and your glutes.  It’s not easy but you can do it.  Consult a yoga instructor or physical therapist if you need help.

I would come out of it if I would feel any pain.  The morning after I did this, I kid you not.  When I woke up in the morning, I did not feel any pain or stiffness.  I felt really strong.  I told a friend about this and he tried it and said he felt better the next day too.  Now keep in mind that you can modify this pose as well.  There’s is also baby cobra which is a great place to start too.

Could tummy time be the answer to back pain?  I also did rolling from back to tummy, happy baby, just kind of rolling around the floor and it felt amazing.  Aim for two or three times a day, for three to five minutes at a time to start, and progress from there.

If it’s good enough for a baby, it’s good enough for you baby.  Take care of yourself because we need you baby!!

Companies That Test On Animals — 2018

Companies That Test On Animals — 2018
The following list consists of companies that are not cruelty-free. Its main source is PETA, and I’ve supplemented it with my own research.

These brands engage in animal testing OR fund animal testing in some capacity, the most common example being by testing on animals where the law requires it.

Big Corporations Who Test On Animals

Most of these brands are owned by a few giant corporations: L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Johnson & Johnson, S.C. Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, Reckitt Benckiser, Church & Dwight, Unilever, and Henkel.

These companies own the majority of the brands we commonly find in most retailer stores and drugstores, and they’re making no real efforts to change their unethical policies.

There are however two exceptions, the first one being Colgate-Palmolive, which have agreed to gradually change their policy. PETA currently lists Colgate-Palmolive as “working toward regulatory changes to reduce the number of animals used for testing”. This does NOT mean the company is or will be cruelty-free in the near future! It’s only a small step in the right direction, and the company still DOES test on animals at this point.

The second exception consists of a few select brands. While in most cases, brands that are owned by companies that test on animals are not cruelty-free, L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership. The same goes for Too Faced and Becca (now owned by Estee Lauder but still cruelty-free) and Tom’s of Maine (Colgate-Palmolive). All the brands mentioned on this list, however, do test on animals.
