How to Work Out The Lazy Way

Do you want to be more active but still be chill at the same time? OK this is the lazy way to be active but still chill. Great for recovery days or if you want to ease your way into an active lifestyle. Because who likes being jarred anyway?

In the Morning

When you wake up, if your first thoughts are thoughts of dread about going to work or feelings of fatigue, pause and just take a deep breath. Think of something you are really grateful for. You can just lay there and either pray or just think about some beautiful things. Unicorns, puppies, butterflies, swimming pools, water falls, the ocean etc. Breathe and think beautiful thoughts. (That was easy.)

You’re here!!

Then you can still stay in bed longer but just start to stretch in bed. Stretch out your legs and breath. Just roll around a bit. Maybe stretch your legs. Slowly roll out of bed to standing. After you go to the bathroom, get a big glass of water and start drinking water because you haven’t had anything to drink in a while.

Got Sun Salutes?

If you feel like it do some sun salutes but no pressure if you don’t want to. But this is a great time to do some. It’s great for you body and mind and your digestion. But if you don’t feel like it, no problem. But do give thanks for your practice.

Take a shower

Take a relaxing shower and just breathe and stay present. Put on some awesome music and throw some eucalyptus or rosemary essential oils on the shower floor in a spot where you won’t slip. I put baking soda on the floor of my shower and then throw the essential oils on that. As you shower stay present and deep breathe and again practice mindfulness and imagine the shower washing away any stress or negativity. There are shower meditations you can do too.

What to do while commuting

As you head out the door whether you are taking a bus or driving, Start to think about your posture and how you can make your neck a little bit taller and your begin to engage your belly button to spine. As you sit down squeeze your inner thighs together and also bring you shoulder blades down your back and list your chest. Practice good posture. Also make a deal with yourself that you won’t get angry at other bad drivers or rude people. They probably slept like hell and are having a bad day. Just listen to some good music and think about how awesome you are. A lil Bob Marley will make your day. Cuz every little thing is gonna be OK. If you want to drink coffee or tea it’s fine but cut back on the sugar and also make sure to drink a lot of water at work.

Walking In to Work

When you get to work park a little bit farther away. And as you walk in keep singing that song of yours. Don’t worry Be Happy or whatever song that lift your spirits. Stand tall with your abs in and walk slowly for 5 to 10 minutes. Walk heel to toe and look 12-20 feet in front of you as you walk. Walk with your head up and don’t look at the ground as you can strain your neck. Relax your neck, shoulders and back. Swing your arms with a slight bend and don’t arch back forward or backward. Wear some comfortable shoes. Get rid of those heels because they aren’t helping you sweetie pie. Be grateful that you have a job and that you have the ability to work.

Check in Regularly with your posture

If you work at a desk, it is an awesome take to get an ergonomic evaluation. To make sure that your computer is set at the appropriate eye level for you and that your keyboard is in proper set up. And then when you are working take period breaks to stand up and stretch your body, your neck, your eyes to look at the distance and then look back at the keyboard. Do eye circles, wrist circles. At least every hour you should get up and move around. Volunteer to run errands for your boss or anything that you can do to walk around. Sitting is now considered the new smoking. So get out regularly and often.

Are you on your feet frequently?

It would be great if we could have the perfect balance between standing and sitting. But of course that’s not always possible. But if you do get to move around, make sure you are standing and walking with good form and breathe a lot. Wear comfortable shoes do some calf raises if you get the chance, and keep your abs in as you walk and shoulder blades down your back with chest open. Be glad you get paid to be active. Double bonus you get paid to exercise!! Woot Woot!!

Take frequent breaks

You might be unhappy with your work but remember to try to think happy thoughts. Breathe and relax as much as possible. You may not enjoy your work but that doesn’t mean you have to think terrible thoughts. You can think about whatever you want. Nobody has to know what you are thinking. You can think about unicorns, bunnies and puppies galore. Flowers, music, art, dance or your beautiful memories. Think about wishes that can come true if you dare to dream. DAY DREAM and often!! Picture yourself fit and healthy. What would that feel like? It might feel odd but stranger things can happen.

You made it through the day

Freedom at last!! Be glad that you made it. As you walk or drive away, leave your work at work. Don’t think about work instead think about more happy thoughts. Listen to some beautiful music. Do you have a favorite song? Also you can have infinite favorite songs. Be a music hog!! If you haven’t listened to Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major by JS Bach, I highly recommend it. It’s over 300 years old. So very cool!!

What is your favorite physical activity?

Do you like to swim, bike, run, dance, clean, stretch, Tai Chi, Pilates, Zumba, kick boxing, Karate, square dance, tennis? If it’s something you enjoy, it doesn’t feel like exercise. Now let’s say you have a long commute and you’re just dog tired… no problem. If you have a family, tell them you’re exhausted and lie down and take a lil nap, stretch and relax. End your day like you started. Relax baby, you made it!! Try to take a break from social media and maybe listen to this song. Go to 2:30 if you don’t want to hear me talk.

Mean People are Grown Up Toddlers

Mean people can be scary.

Have you ever had to interact with mean people? If you are alive you undoubtedly have had the experience of someone being mean or giving you a dirty look for no reason. The examples are endless. From the woman looking you up and down at the grocery store to your boss that is frustrated with life. It happens.

Have you ever been around a 2 year old that is just screaming his head off for no reason whatsoever. Just full on crying. Usually it’s a family party and you realize, the child did not have their regular nap, ate a bunch of sugar and was running around all day with friends and is just exhausted. As a parent, you would take your child to a quiet place, give them something to eat and drink, give them a hug and just hold them and comfort them while they cry. Usually within 20 minutes or so they will be sound asleep or comfortable in their pajamas with a snack and ready for bed.

Same thing goes for adults. If you are sleep deprived, haven’t been eating properly, drink a lot of caffeine, add a little hang over and adults act just like toddlers. Only difference is that adults know how to control their impulses a little bit. So they can’t walk around screaming their kids off and throw themselves on the floor. So instead they just become very angry and hold it inside until they explode to the point of being mean and nasty to others. It’s really sad when they are mean to strangers but they honestly don’t know what to do with their anger.

Have a cup of calming tea to calm down. It’s easy peasy.

So that my dear is how people get mean. If this was my husband or wife acting like this. I’d say, “Get over here and get your butt in this bath tub right now.” Throw in some epsom salt, essential oils and baking soda. “You also need a big bowl of hot soup and a cup of calming tea. Here’s a warm robe and socks. Do you want a blanket now or after you eat? OK here’s your favorite music and book, go lie down tuck them in and say rest sweetie pie. I’m here for you but you need to calm down.”

Then I would suggest that they go to yoga,breathe and relax. Listen spa music and watch only comedies and no war movies, video games or anything else that’s going to agitate them. Hopefully they will calm down and realize they were just tired and need a good long rest.

Well if you don’t have anyone to do that for you. DO IT FOR YOURSELF. You can do it. After all NOBODY LIKES A SCREAMING TODDLER. EVEN THE PARENTS WANT TO PULL THEIR HAIR OUT. So do us all a favor AND RELAX SWEETIE PIE. You’ll be back to yourself in no time.

Lavender Eau de Toilette

I was glancing over this book that I’ve had for a while called Bath Scents by Alan Hayes. I found this cool recipe for Lavender Toilet Water.  I made it and I am quite pleased with the results.  What made it even more awesome is that I have lavender plants around my home and I already had lavender oil so the only thing I really needed to buy was some vodka.

Here’s what you’ll need.

  • Spray Bottles (Save empty hair spray bottles and rinse out well and you can repurpose them)
  • 16 ounces distilled water (500 ml)
  • 2 ounces (50 g) lavender buds (about 4 teaspoons dried)
  • 10 ounces vodka (310 ml)
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil

Directions:  Place 2 ounces of lavender buds in a large ceramic bowl and pour boiling 16 ounces of distilled water.  (Personally I used tap water because it’s for my own use.)  Allow it to steep for 12 hours or overnight for a strong infusion.  Oh wow your home will smell absolutely divine!!  Use muslin, cheese cloth or a strainer to separate the lavender buds from the lavender infusion.

Add the vodka and lavender oil, seal in a bottle and leave to stand for two weeks.  Drip through a coffee filter after 2 weeks and then rebottle.

Honestly it smells really nice and not over bearing.  I use it as an air freshener, spray it on my hair and body.  It smells really clean and not over powerful.  I really like it and I hope you do too.

I think this would make a lovely gift for someone.  The greatest thing is that there’s no junk in this spray.  Making your own stuff can be really fun and can save you $$ as well.  Feel free to share this with your friends and comment about your thoughts.

How to Make Bath Bombs

Recipes for Homemade Bath Bombs

Want to learn how to make bath bombs that look great, smell delicious, and fizz wonderfully? We’ve got the full instructions here. Get ready for some bubble-licious bath bomb bliss!

Learning how to make bath bombs is pretty easy. But I must confess that my first experience was not so successful. I googled “making bath bombs” or “how to make bath bombs” or something like that. I found some instructions and followed them, but I ended up with a gooey melting mess.

Several batches later, I figured out how to make bath bombs reliably, and now I’d like to share what I’ve learned 🙂 You’ll be making bath bombs of your own in no time!
Do I need special bath bomb molds?

No special equipment needed 🙂

Don’t let the lack of a mold get in the way of learning how to make bath bombs. There are plenty of things that work well as bath bomb molds.

How to Make Bath Bombs_2

A handy mold for making spherical homemade bath bombs is a two-part, snap-together Christmas decoration (pictured above left). You can find one in a craft stores. Don’t worry if you can’t get hold of one though, because there are plenty of other things that work just as well.

Chocolate molds (pictured above right) work well, and come in nice shapes like hearts and flowers. You can find them in craft of cookware stores.

There are plenty of other things that work as improvised molds. For round bombs, you can improvise a mold by cutting a tennis ball in half. Other things that work well as molds are muffin trays, ice-cube trays, and shot glasses. Just hunt around your kitchen for a small receptacle of some sort.

In general, smaller bath bombs are easier to make than big ones. Big ones tend to crumble, whereas small ones seem to be more robust.

However, if you really want to buy a set of bath bomb molds, then you can find a large range of bath bomb molds on Amazon.
Bath Bomb Recipes

Now that you’ve got your mold, here are the other bits and bobs that you’ll need to make bath bombs. You can find most of these in the grocery store.
Equipment

  • Metal or glass mixing bowl
  • Spritzer/spray bottle
  • Gloves
  • Bath Bomb Molds
  • Sieve

Make sure you use a metal or glass mixing bowl rather than a plastic one. Plastic will absorb the smell of the essential oils. That’s okay, I guess, but anything you put in the bowl in the future might pick up the fragrance too!

How to Make Bath Bombs: Ingredients

The ingredients below are enough to make approx 6 small bath bombs or 3 large ones:

  • 1 cup (240 mL or 8 fl oz) citric acid – see below for advice on where to buy
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 20-30 drops of essential oil – you might need more or less depending on the
  • strength of the fragrance.
  • 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil, apricot oil, or olive oil (optional)
  • 15-20 drops of food colouring (optional)
  • A tiny bit of water

Notes: Baking soda can usually be found in the baking section of the supermarket. Baking soda is also called “bicarbonate of soda”.

The tablespoon of oil is optional. It gives a lovely moisturising feel . Don’t use almond oil though if you or the intended recipient have nut allergies!

To make nice colourful bath bombs , you can mix the basic food colours (red, blue, yellow) to achieve just about any colour you want. Purple is a little tricky. When I mix red and blue, I get… green! But then the bath bomb turns purple once it sets, so all is good 🙂 Just warning you, so you don’t get a surprise!

Where do I get Citric Acid?

A couple of people have written in to ask where they can buy citric acid. You can buy citric acid on Amazon, or else you can look in the baking or canning section in your supermarket (e.g. Walmart).

If you really can’t find citric acid anywhere, then there is an alternative. One of our readers wrote in with this suggestion for how to make bath bombs using cream of tartar instead:
“I tried the recipe with cream of tartar instead of citric acid , and it works just as well. However, it is quite thick, so half the amount is needed – ie. 2 cups of baking soda, 1/2 a cup of cream of tartar instead of 1 cup citric acid. I hope this is comprehensible and helpful! Keep up the great work!”

You can find cream of tartar in baking section of most supermarkets.

Ingredients not to use

Borax:
Please don’t use this. Borax (sodium borate) is used as ant poison. If ingested, it’s toxic to your liver and kidneys. Eating it can cause liver cancer. Even if you don’t drink your bathwater (and I hope you don’t!), do you really want to take a bath in this?
Cornflour:
Gives the water a nice “soft” texture and makes your skin feel nice… but it feeds yeast infections. I’d give it a miss!

Method For How to Make Bath Bombs

It’s a good idea to work in small batches until you get the hang of how to make bath bombs. Scale the recipe down to 1/3 cup of citric acid and 2/3 cup of baking soda at a time. That will still be enough to make two small bath bombs per batch.

Ready? Put on your gloves, and here we go:

1. Mix together citric acid and baking soda in a bowl . Make sure they’re mixed thoroughly. I find that the easiest way to mix the two powders is actually to sift them back and forth between two bowls.

2. Add essential oils, optional table spoon of extra oil, and food colouring . Mix rapidly with your hands before the mixture has a chance to fizz. The food colouring will make the mixture a bit clumpy, but you can re-powderise the clumps by rubbing them between your hands.

3. Spray water onto the mixture a tiny bit at a time , and continue mixing. You probably need less water than what you think! Aim for a consistency where mixture is still pretty crumbly but will just hold its shape when you squeeze it hard in your hand.
4. Pack the mixture tightly into your mold(s). If you’re using a two-part mold like the Christmas decoration, then slightly overfill each half of the mold, and press them together tightly. Don’t twist, just press. Tap the mold to release the bath bomb.
5. Let your bomb(s) dry for a couple of hours in a warm, dry place. Keep them out of direct sunlight though. I like to place the bombs in a little “nests” of tissue paper. It seems to help them dry better, and stops round ones from getting flat on the bottom.

6. Use within a few weeks . They smell so good you’ll probably want to use them straight away anyway! But it’s important to know that they lose their fizzing power if they’re kept in storage for too long. If you give one as a gift, make sure you tell the recipient to enjoy their relaxing fragrant fizzy bath sooner rather than later!

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Here are the questions I’ve been asked the most about how to make bath bombs. I hope you find the answers helpful! If you have another question then please ask me in the comments.

How many bombs does the recipe make?
The volume of powdered ingredients is about 3 cups, so that makes about 3 big ones (3 inches), or 6 small ones (2.5 inches). Or about 30 ice-cube sized ones, in case you want to make mini ones.

Why does my bath bomb crumble when I try to get it out of the mould?
This could be either because the mixture needs to be compressed more or because it’s a little bit too dry. When you put the mixture into the mould, press it in really hard. It can also help to leave it in there a minute or two before you tap it out. If neither of these helps, then try spraying a tiny bit more water on to the mixture.

Why are my bath bombs swelling into blobs?
If your bomb seems to be mysteriously expanding, then you’ve added too much water and the fizz reaction has already started. You can rescue a too-wet mixture by adding more baking soda and citric acid – two parts baking soda for every one part citric acid. Next time try using less water.

Will the food coloring stain my bath tub or my skin?
No, I’ve never seen a problem with this. It gets so diluted in the bath that it’s not a problem.

When I mix the food colours, why do they not make the color I expect?
Sometimes when you mix food coloring colors they don’t do what you expect, e.g. you mix red and blue and they make green instead or purple. I’m not sure what the reason is but one way to get around it is to use soap colors instead, which you can buy on Amazon.

Can I put herbs or petals in my bath bomb? Yes! Just don’t put them in a jacuzzi because they might clog the vents.

How do I stop the bottom of my bombs from going all flat?
Put them in a “nest” of crumpled tissue paper while they’re drying. Or, let them dry in their moulds for a few hours before you take them out.

Can I use perfume / vanilla essence instead of essential oil?
Yes! You’ll need to experiment with the amount.

Can I use cream of tartar instead of citric acid?
Yes! See the bit of the tutorial under “where do I get citric acid?“. Basically you substitute 1/2 cup cream of tartar instead of 1 cup citric acid.

Can I use baby oil / coconut oil instead of olive oil?
Yes!

Does it matter what brand of baking soda / citric acid I use?
No. I just use the inexpensive supermarket brand.

How much is 1 cup?
Approx 240 mL, or 8.5 fluid oz. The recipe is pretty forgiving if you don’t get the amounts of dry ingredients exactly right. The main thing to get right is to only add a *tiny* bit of water.

Can I add glitter?
Yes, but don’t add too much or the bath will look like you killed a pixie (as one visitor put it). Try 1/8 of a teaspoon. The best type of glitter to use is “synthetic mica” glitter, which is made from natural minerals (not plastic) and won’t pollute our oceans.

What’s the shelf life?
Use within 6 months, and ideally within 2 months. They lose their fizzing power gradually.

Thrifty Tea Tree Cleaner

pexels-photo-255441.jpegThere’s nothing I love more than saving $$ on something.  I first started making natural cleaners a few years back when I read a book about how all of the chemicals that we breathe and that touch our skin get absorbed into our body. (Think about how the nicotine patch gets absorbed into your skin.)  So I decided to start researching recipes and I found one that works really well and it’s very affordable.

So a recently published a  blog post  on how you can use  Tea Tree Oil for your hair treatments.  So I’m on a bit of a Tea Tree roll.  Tea Tree has many benefits and it is a killer on germs.  And once you have the tea tree, the other ingredients are readily available.

Another benefit of the cleaner is that you can give it to your kids to clean  and don’t have to worry about them being poisoned.  You can buy a spray bottle or repurpose an empty hair spray bottle.  Take an empty hair spray bottle and clean it out with baking soda and vinegar and give it a good cleaning.  Rinse well.  You shouldn’t be able to smell anything in the bottle.  If you can still smell some of the hairspray then use more baking soda and vinegar, shake it up and rinse and repeat.  That way I’m repurposing something that would normally end up in the landfill.  (Note please purchase some labels or use squares of paper and tape it on the bottle to write what is in the bottle.) This would be called a General Purpose Cleaner.  You don’t want to think you are spraying hair spray but really it’s cleaner.  Or people will think you are insane when you are spraying hair spray on your counter.My my mom comes to visit, she would be asking me what is this?  So now I know better so that’s why I really label things because sometimes I forget too about what’s in the bottle.

These kids are figuring out how to clean the planet.  They will be glad their parents use natural cleaners.

Here are the ingredients:

General Purpose Cleaner

  1. 1/4 cup vinegar
  2. 20-30 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
  3. 3/4 cup distilled water

And that’s it.  You can use this on your hands if you are in a hurry, counter tops, stoves, floors, microwave, refrigerator, bathroom etc.  It’s really good and it doesn’t have a bunch of ingredients.  I have another recipe that’s citrus which I’ll post as well in case you want to try that.  But it has so many more ingredients and I just like to keep things kind of basic and it’s also less expensive.

All Purpose Citrus Cleaner

  1. 1/2 cup vinegar
  2. 1/2 cup distilled water
  3. 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol
  4. 5 drops Lemon essential oil
  5. 5 drops orange essential oil
  6. 5 drops grapefruit essential oil

The Citrus Cleaner is really wonderful.  But I’m trying to help you guys out and not make you buy a bunch of stuff you don’t really need.  But it is a good one if you want to go that way.  Also with the added alcohol, you really get the feeling like everything is super clean.

My intention with these cleaners is that we can clean without injuring ourselves in the process.  Also the use of these products will not harm our planet or you or your kids so it’s definitely a win win situation.
